Tonight I went to the Seaport area of Boston and checked out the four tall ships at Fish Pier. There are other ships at other piers. They are here to celebrate the bicentennial of the War of 1812. The ships are beautiful, handcrafted and with a gazillion sails. Pictures to come later.

Then I went to a bar called Drink, which I would link to but the website tells you nothing. It's one of Barbara Lynch's places, a 1950's cocktails meet 21st century modern kind of bar. (I've eaten at another of her restaurants, Sportello, and it was amazing.) Friends have mentioned it and I've heard about it a few times. The cocktails were very good (no menu, tell the bartender what you want or what you like and he will recommend something) and the food was fun. I ordered the fried pickled green beans with aioli and the cornbread. The beans were delicious, tangy and a little vingary, went well with the aioli. The cornbread had been baked in a corn pone shape that at first reminded me of madeleines, which started me wondering what Proust would have been like had he been Southern instead of French.

While I liked Drink and would go back, there were moments that reminded me of the scene from Love Actually when Alan Rickman's character buys a necklace and Rowan Atkinson goes through great gyrations to giftwrap it. My first drink was stirred, then rested, then other things added, then ice put in the shaker, then a little something swirled around the (cold) glass, then the drink was shaken and finally a bit of lemon peel was swirled around the rim. The whole process took about 10 minutes.
